SNR-ISM Research Supernova Remnants and the Interstellar Medium Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are an important component of the galactic zoo. In addition to marking the end-point of the evolution of massive stars, they are also an important source of energy for the interstellar medium (ISM). In addition, the interaction between SNRs and clouds in the ISM may cause the collapse of such clouds to form new stars. Brad Wallace (brad@drao.nrc.ca) is currently investigating the interaction between SNRs and the ISM for his Ph.D. research. The interaction is being studied using data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, the Effelsberg 100m radio telescope, and the Five Colleges Radio Astrophysical Observatory. Brad's research is concentrating on the ISM around filled-center (a.k.a. "Crab-like" or "plerionic") SNRs with an eye to learning more about why these objects lack an observable radio continuum shell as seen in all other types of SNRs. This work is being carried out in collaboration with Tom Landecker of the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory Brenda Matthews is investigating a possible new SNR and it's interaction with the ISM.
